West Highland Way - Travel-Lite
Inverarnan to Crianlarich - 6 1/2 miles (10.5 km)
At Inverarnan on the West Highland Way, cross over the bridge on the river Falloch, walk across the field to Beinglas farm, and head out to Crianlarich. A left turn at Beinglas farm takes you back onto the Way, heading north into Glen Falloch. The going is not too pleasant as conditions underfoot are boggy and uneven, and the path is tangly.
The path soon opens out, as you walk the lower reaces of the glen, to follow the river bank. The River Falloch is very beautiful,with deep brown pools, creamy falls, and broad shallows. This is a wild stretch, but you are not far from the road and the West Highland way Railway, which runs through the glen.
Glen Falloch marks the next stage of the walk on the Highland Way, with the country beginning to open out, and the views become wider and more spacious. All along Glen Falloch are the Scots pines, Britain's only indigenous conifer. The ones here are the remnants of the old Caledonian forest which used to cover almost the whole of the north of Scotland.
Proceeding up Glen Falloch, the Way leaves the river to cross under the railway by means of a cattle creep, and then over the main road. A short climb up the hill takes you onto an old track. This is the first of the old military roads which were built by the English redcoats, you encounter as you head north. Approaching Crianlarich, the walker again has a choice; a path which goes to Tyndrum, or a little diversion to Crainlarich on the West Highland Way, with its shops, post office, railway station and Youth hostel.
